TechnoActivity: Movie Reflection, "3 Idiots" Rajkumar Hirani

Whole movie is narrated in a see-saw stylish look, where flash back and present mode interchange their positions on the screen more than half a dozen times. Coming to the flash back, Rancho is the best student in the college who believes that learning in college is not just enough to excel in life; it requires something more to reach the shore of excellence (not success). Farhan Qureshi dreams to become a wild life photographer, but is here in Engineering College only to satisfy his family. Raju Rastogi’s story is entirely different who hail from a poor family and struggles to survive.

Aamir Khan’s Chotte who later gets the name Phunsukh Wangdu, more popular by the character’s acquired name Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shamaldas Chanchad, had my greatest empathy since the beginning up to the very end of the movie. Chotte wishes to be on the path of being an engineer and how optimistic is he that he even compromised the paper called “Diploma” in place of having all the tools needed to be an engineer – knowledge. Chotte was born to a poor family. His definite goals enabled him to strive even harder. He has worked it through hook and crook and even against the school director Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) played by Boman Irani. The latter has sent the parents of Raju and Fahran about the influences Chotte has brought to the both of them. Prof. Viru has seen so much talent from him and as a precautionary steps, he made several efforts to disband Raju and Fahran with him. Chotte has talent and expresses freedom towards his action that sometimes lead to other’s misunderstanding.
One thing that has told me that Rancho has this attitude is when he replied calmly to the ragging senior. Rancho always surprises every time he appeared and overwhelmed other people around him as well as the professors with his stupefying stories. In the movie, Rancho was appeared when every freshman in the university was bullied by the seniors in their weird “ritual”. But Rancho did not perform that weird ritual and he always whispered in his self “aal iz well, aal iz well”. So what he did was we run and went to the small room and locked the door and the professor outside do the countdown from one to ten and afraid him. But Rancho did not frighten about the words of the professor. While the professor do the countdown, he make a way, he make a smart invention, and he make a bright idea by applying simple application of basic Physics so that he can avoid the weird ritual. So what he did was he connects the spoon to the wire and tap the spoon to the ruler and he put this outside the door. With this simple application in physics, he had taught the seniors and even the professor a valuable lesson. For his simple technique and strategy, I salute him because in just ten seconds imagine he can do this amazing thing which I know everyone of us cannot think of this thing like of what he was done. In school, Rancho used to keep outside more often inside classrooms and if he gets kicked out from the one class and he go in other classroom because of his attitude that he keeps on insulting the professor and saying something whether it is good or not. But I like the fact that he was not scared of being scolded by his teachers. One day, their professor Mr. Viru “Virus” Sahastrabudhhe shared a very interesting stories about the astronaut’s pen, in the middle part of the discussion their professor said to them who wants this pen?, everyone was raising their hands expect for Rancho because I think he is not satisfied of the explanation of the professor and he asked a question “Sir, if in space fountain pen ball pen cannot be used, why did not astronauts try using a pencil in space Sir?”. After that everyone was laughing and because of that their professor Mr. Viru “Virus” Sahastrabudhhe was got angered and got insulted. With his question, I can say that he has a wild imagination. Rancho believes and he always used to say that knowledge is increasing everywhere where ever you get, gain it. And yes, it is absolutely true. Knowledge is not limited only in one place such as schools, houses or everything else but knowledge can get everywhere. And whenever you get it, grab and gain and spread that to the people running around. Rancho also believes that success in engineering is not achieved by memorizing the contents or the definition given by textbooks or professors but success in engineering achieved by understanding and applying it in concepts. Yes, I do agree with the statement of Rancho that we should not be dependent on the contents or the definition of the books or the lessons given by our teachers because it is limited only, we should explore more things in our own so that we can get and we can gain more knowledge. I remember before, one of my professor said that explore new things in your own and discovered it on your own way because I’m just your instructor or facilitator because I cannot give everything on you. So what he did to his students is he makes a thing that would teach us to explore and discover new things. Another inspiring message that Rancho said to the movie was he believes that one should follow excellence, not success, as success will come by itself if excellence is followed. In this piece of line, I absolutely say that it is very true. You cannot be successful in life if you do not have excellent mind. Excellence does not only mean that you are intelligent or whatsoever but it’s the strategies and techniques that you make in order to be successful one someday. Rancho is completely different from his classmates. He is different the way he thinks, the way he act and the way he handle things and people around. We all know that Rancho is very fan of asking questions but he asked questions at the right places and in the right time. He makes simpler the concepts in the textbooks and come up with bright ideas which I think his classmates does not have. There was a scene in the movie that Rancho said that going to school is not all about having good grades, it is all about learning and gaining knowledge in what we do. So this is his mind set. Yes, it is definitely right. For me as student, having or getting good grades in school is not enough without learning and gaining knowledge in whatever I do. Another statement in the movie, Rancho said that make your passion your profession. As I watched the movie, I can see that Rancho is very passionate in his profession. He did the things in his field with passion and determination. And I do believe in this line that loving and have a passion in your profession will bring you into success. He also mentioned in the movie that he learned technology not only with passion but he learned with all his heart and never stopping finding new things. It is true, we need to put our hearts in what we are doing and never stop finding new things so that we can be successful someday. Rancho plays a role of a great adviser in the movie to his two friends namely Farhan and Raju and the people around. Every time his friends encountered problems, rancho is on the rescue by giving the right advise to the. He is a very funny person. Every time they were together they were very happy and making jokes to everyone. Rancho mentioned that he thinks of a school that I not a race. But it is a place of enlightening ideas, gaining knowledge and dedication for study. And he also said that life is not a race, if you do not run fast, you will be like a broken cuckoo bird. So it means that we need to work hard and we need to be excellent so that we do not left in the race of life. One of the characteristics that I admired most to him is he was very especially when the father of his best friend Raju brought to the hospital. At the end, Rancho has conquered the struggles in his life one by one with his bravery, excellence, intelligence, self-confidence and a lot more. But sad to say he vanished without saying goodbye to his two friends –Farhan and Raju and to his beloved lover.

On the other hand, Raju Rastogi has been a big role to the development of the movie. He, as well, was born to a poor family which dreams of escaping poverty by sending Raju to the Imperial College of Engineering, one of India’s prime colleges. This character’s family plot has affected me a huge impact. Many Filipino families today set to send youngsters to school to be able to attain education. Parents would boldly say that even through a needle’s hole, they will surpass just to be able to have the “key”. The part where he was interrogated by the school director Prof. Viru Sahastrabudhhe himself and was on the situation of choosing between being expelled from the college or talking about what the other two have done the night before. It was so heart breaking scene for me cause Raju’s family has been so optimistic about his collegiate journey but he ends up being called to the office and receiving a report of expulsion. His father was sick and may not be able to handle this too much drama. This situation of Raju’s was pitiful. I mean having his loving family, sick dad and supportive mom, he should have felt desperate thus deciding to commit suicide by jumping off the window of the school director’s office. He doesn’t want to put his friends down as well for he is concerned about the other two. His mother was retired from school and tired almost all the time of taking care of his father and his mother is always murmuring because of their situation. His dad was a postmaster at his age and was paralyzed his half body, due to this their salary completely gone because of the huge consumption of money for pharmacy and his sister cannot get married because they are too poor that his family cannot offer to the husband’s family a car as a returned fortune. (In Indian tradition, when a girl in the family involved in getting married, she has to give and offering fortune to the husband’s family). Since he is the only son so Raju should took the responsibilities of helping his family and getting out from poverty. Every day, he always prays and every problem he encountered in his life, he wears a ring for this. I can say that I can relate the story and status of Raju Rastogi to my life. I am a product of a poor family. My father suffered severe illness and my mother does not have work. In our family, my elder brother act as a Raju Rastogi, he is the bread winner and he did a lot of things or the reason that he would like to get out our family from poverty. Even though my brother provides us everything but still I study hard and pursue my course which is Information Technology so that I can help and uplift my family in our current status in life. Raju is different from Rancho instead of learning a new things without depending given by the textbooks, he was just memorizing the contents or the definition given by the textbooks without minding if he can understand the things that he has memorizing as long as he will able to pass the exam given by the strict professor. There was a part in the movie that I was moved in my position and it was very touching moment because of his sincerity of saying thank you to his friends Rancho, Pia and Farhan when the time his father brought to the hospital by his helpful and lovable friends and his sincerity also of saying the words forgive me to Rancho because of his bad reaction done to his friends for bringing his dad to the hospital using only the scooter of Pia. Raju was not able to concentrate on his study that resulted to get low grade in exam and poor academic performance because of his big fear to fail his family’s expectation. Actually, there was a part in the movie that Raju and his friend Farhan was disappointed of the exam result and failed on the exam. I know all of us also disappointed when we got low grade in exam because we afraid to fail in our subjects but we are not perfect human being sometimes we experience failures in our life. According to the saying, failure or mistake is the best teacher. Raju and Farhan was also sad because they thought that their friend rancho was not able to pass the exam but when they found out that Rancho was on the top and got the first place, they fell more sad and disappointed. In that day, they learned something about human behaviour.
Raju's paralyzed father goes into a cardiac arrest, and is saved in the nick of time by Rancho and Pia (Kareena Kapoor), Virus' daughter, a medical student who is doing residency in the city hospital. This makes Raju genuinely change his mind about Rancho and becomes his bosom friend along with Farhan.
Raju’s story, complete with a sick dad, teary-eyed mother and unwed sister is shown in black and white in the fashion of the ‘50s movies. You sympathise with his situation while smiling at the stroke of delicious black humour. The film trails their life during the four years in college and after.
Farhan belongs to a family where the parents sacrificed the sole family AC for his room so he could study better.  The film's narrator and best friend of Rancho and Raju. His father wants him to be an engineer despite his love for photography. He later drops out of school and becomes a successful photographer and author of children's books.
The characters were all endearing and funny, and the lead, Rancho (Aamir Khan) had so much intelligence, friendly energy and a sparkle that he could probably carry any movie. "3 Idiots" has its faults with an overly-long length, too many story-lines and some immature humour, but there's enough heart, smarts and originality to remain enjoyable.
These three characters thought me a lot of things. It enlightened my mind and showed me the true meaning of EDUCATION, how to be a successful student, and most above all is the process of learning. If I have a given a chance to choose which characters in the movie 3 idiots that I would like to be is I would absolutely choose Rancho. I would like to be him in many reasons. First is his thinking capacity. He has a great and brilliant mind in doing many things in his life. He has always full of ideas and he is very good in his chosen field. Second is his passion in his profession. Third is he is a great adviser. In the movie, Rancho became a good adviser to his two friends. He always reminds his friends to make your passion, your profession, that’s why his friends realized many things because of this reminder he always said and this said line by Rancho is really heartwarming and it’s really gratifying to do the things that you really love and wanted rather than making a things that you don’t really like or let’s say you don’t have a choice like in Farhan’s situation. Another is he is very helpful especially when his friends encountered problems in school or in family. He is always there willing to help as long as he can. But the most important thing is he has a thoughtful mind in which he thought everyone of us a true meaning of education and how learning is done. In general, I like the movie it inspires a lot and it gives more knowledge to the viewers. This movie also reminds me the importance of a friendship. In this world we cannot live in our own, so we find and we need companion in our life because according to the saying “No man is an island”. And this movie makes me think about my study, since now I am in my fourth year in college and almost every moment is busy. Over-all, the movie for me was so perfect, I enjoyed it, and I learned a lot of things which I can apply it in everyday life and everywhere. So now I would like to end by this statement of Rancho that life is a race, if you don’t run fast, you will be like a broken egg of the cuckoo bird. So it is your decision whether to left or to run in the race of life. Let us make sure that we always did our best so that we cannot left in the race of life and make sure that we do not take the things for granted in order to be successful in the future and in order to achieve our goals in life. And remind yourself always about this word and say it "Aal iz well" (All is Well).
These 3 idiots steal your heart by making you laugh, think, realize and try to implement, during the entire span of movie starting from ragging scene till the end. One must strongly question Aamir Khan, when he will be out of this 20’s age. After the six packed look for Ghazini, the way Aamir Khan has shaped himself for “3 idiots” college going guy makes you feel awestruck. Kudos, to this talented hero! Next to him is Shrman Joshi, who is a pick among the lot with his extra ordinary timing either in comic episodes or in melodrama. Madhavan, has not got the meaty role to perform but is best as usual. Kareena Kapoor is totally cornered in the movie and she doesn’t have any great thing to perform. Boman Irani, the wonderful virus very soon make your system a Virus affected with his differently styled costumes and his make up. One more character, whom I have missed to introduce you is Omi Vaidya, batch mate of this 3 idiots who just believes in mugging the books is a character created by Director to target those students whom one can normally be observed.

If I were to choose as to whose fate would I want be like  mine, I’d prefer Raju’s. His superb problems are just so awesome considering the movies resolution. It may been like he has undergone the typical life of a student.
